I was born in Western Australia in the years shortly after World War 2, when Australia was still very much a part of the British Commonwealth. In those early years, the books I read were inevitably English, romantic, medieval; including the traditional heroes: Robin Hood, King Arthur. Personal interest and the proximity of the recent war led to reading much of Paul Brickhill’s work: The Dam Busters, Reach for the Sky, The Great Escape. And an interest in aviation led to an early period in the RAAF.
As an engineering profession continued, a penchant for ‘design’ emerged, and much of the work which followed involved the writing of technical specifications (and the very occasional short story). Project work around the world led to periods spent living overseas (Hong Kong, Singapore); finally resulting in a move to England in 2004, where I have remained.
The loss of my wife was the trigger to cross the boundary and move into a full-blown fictional novel.
